Time for another gift list, my friends. This one is for people who love food and drink. And who doesn't, really? Yay food! I am writing this list because the lovely people over at Lebowski's reminded me that you can get vouchers for restaurants and bars. It's something I never think of but would actually make a great gift for someone. If you know their favourite place to eat, get them vouchers for a night out. It's thoughtful but easy, which is a perfect combination in a gift.
If you do find yourself in my neck of the woods, you're spoiled for eating choice. In addition to the afore mentioned Lewbowskis, you've got the Finnieston, Big Slope, Mother India, the 78 (when their oven is actually working), Mister Singh's, the Sisters, Thai Siam, Bukhara, Kelvingrove Cafe, Crabshakk and Old Salty's. Apologies to any I missed - as you can see, there's a plethora in the Finnieston/Kelvingrove area.
Other good foodie gift ideas include:
Strawberry marshmallow macarooms at Sweet Vegan
I promise you, you will not miss the pig bone and cartilage (or gelatine, as it's euphemistically known) or cows milk.
Booze: River Cottage Handbook No.12
For the lover of, you guessed it, booze. This book helps the booze lover get started home brewing, fermenting and creating everything from elderflower wine to blackberry whiskey. Give the book and receive many bottles of booze over the years in return. The gift that keeps on giving.
A cheeky re-imagining of the traditional plastic water bottle, this glass version is perfect for storage and can be put in the dishwasher and microwave. It would look great on the dinner table full of your favourite beverage.
There is something delightfully retro about the idea of wearing an apron for cooking. I remember my mother had a variety of aprons she kept with her tea towels - pastel things, with ruffles along the bottom, which she probably made with her own hands. I wish we still had them, but I think she got rid of them several years before she passed away. I could have used one on Thanksgiving, actually, when I was cooking at a friend's house. It would have saved me from bringing a change of clothes!
This adorable retro apron is made from Monsoon off cuts and all profits will be donated to the Monsoon Accessorize trust. The Trust helps disadvantaged women and children in Asia through education, health and income generation projects.
Fire King pitcher
I am a huge fan of Fire King dish ware. Also sometimes referred to as jadeite, Fire King is a line of glass dishes, baking accessories and cookware that can be used in the oven. They are collectible pieces, so if it's a hit, you could be starting your recipient on the road toward obsessive searching and buying. It's pretty hard to find in the UK, but you can buy it on eBay and Etsy. I love this pitcher from Etsy.
Though, if the person you're buying for is a huge fan of Buffy, and has watched it an embarrassing number of times, they might like a mug just like the one Giles used to drink from. Yes, I am a big nerd. (BTW, this mug is £11)
Ottolenghi Christmas hamper
From sweet to savoury, with flavours from across Europe and the Middle East, Ottolenghi's Christmas hamper has you covered. If you don't live in London, the Ottolenghi website gives you a little of the fantastic deli restaurant at home. There are a range of hampers ranging from £55 to £95
Whiskey Advent Calendar, Harvey Nichols
Have a wee dram every evening between now and Christmas with this Drinks by the Dram advent calendar. Some of these whiskeys you'll know, some might be new to you. A great way to maintain that holiday buzz!
You will no doubt be aware of Dualit but if you aren't yet a convert, I can attest these toasters are worth the extra money. Manufactured in the United Kingdom, every part of the toasters can be replaced. If something goes wrong, you just send it back and they fix it and send it back to you. After going through about one or two cheap toasters a year, I realised it was actually more economical to buy good toaster that will last years. And it doesn't hurt that they have that adorable retro design.
